A good laugh can get you through a whole day. A maniacal laugh lets you siphon off all those “crazy” plans stewing in your brain and gives those around you a slight pause to consider just how far they’re willing to push you.

Like Cabin in the Woods, Tucker and Dale vs Evil expertly subverted horror movie tropes by making the guys you think are the villains the unfortunate victims of bad luck and dumb college students just waiting to die. Of course, it doesn’t help when you’re carrying a scythe and laughing creepily.

Okay, I’m not gonna lie, this is a bit of a cheat, but there is some laughter here so bear with me. While Smaug the dragon has now become the dragon by which all others will be judged in terms of special effects thanks to The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, it was the 1977 cartoon film of The Hobbit, produced by Rankin/Bass, that first introduced me to Smaug the Stupendous (voiced by Richard Boone). Hear him boast and brag to Bilbo.

I’m not the biggest fan of Disney doing live-action versions of their animated movies, but even I can admit that Glenn Close was an inspired choice to play Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians. I think the laugh speaks for itself.

One of the great reimaginings of a classic Christmas story, Scrooged takes the message of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and overhauls it for a modern audience. It may have been made in the late 80s, but Scrooged still holds up thanks to brilliant writing, memorable moments, and a stellar cast that includes one of Bill Murray’s best performances.

One of the ghostly reinterpretations is that of the Ghost of Christmas Past (David Johansen, a.k.a. Buster Poindexter) as a cabby ready to start Frank Cross (Murray) on his journey of self-discovery by scaring the living daylights out of him.
