The White Album is a record I didn’t listen to much growing up since my mother had an aversion to it in the wake of Charles Manson and the Manson Family murders, but there are a lot of songs from the LP that continue to pop up as my favorites. Must be all those compilationsI listened to as a kid.

“Blackbird” always sounded like a simple lullaby to me. It’s not an overproduced song, save for the chirping birds on the album, just Paul McCartney and a guitar. Turns out, the McCartney was inspired to write “Blackbird” in response to the racial tension in the United States.

And as a bonus, here’s some backstage video of Paul McCartney rehearsing “Blackbird” for the promotional demo for The Beatles’ company, Apple.
